My heart expressed through ceramics.

My experience shared through words.

My Art

My artistic practice encompasses flowing with my intuition, not forcing the creative process when it doesn’t feel right. I create when I feel the flow and only when I feel the flow.

My art is the expression of what my heart wishes to create, the energy I feel around me, and the lessons and experiences I am moving through in life.

I don’t have a preconceived idea of what I am going to create before starting. I create in the present moment, whatever form, colour or shape feels right when I am in the midst of the creation itself.

This feels the most authentic to me and allows me to get out of my head about what I “should” be creating instead of what organically wants to be created.

The Artist

Sarah Martin is self taught ceramic artist based in the Sunshine Coast whose practice centres on hand-built forms, with a predominant focus on coil building.

From a young child Sarah has always loved model clay, play dough and shaping 3D forms and this interest continued into her teenage years through art class.  Unfortunately clay was put aside as a non essential hobby as she grew older until about 3 years ago.  Here the practice was again taken up as a way to reconnect with her inner child and to incorporate more fun and creativity back into her life.

Teaching herself to hand-build vessels after 14 years away from clay was a rewarding process and now she is at a point where she feels confident in her work and creative style, wishing to share her art with others.

Inspiration came from growing up in Brisbane where she was lucky to be surrounded by many places filled with natural beauty.  With beaches, rainforests and mountains she developed a deep connection to the natural landscape that continue to shape her creative language. Along with other smaller influences coming from her multicultural background;  patterns, colours and forms from both African and Indian culture.

Her style incorporates asymmetry, geometric abstraction, texture and vibrant colours juxtaposing free flowing, organic forms in both her vessel structure and surface design.
